By Air

Jabalpur Airport is the nearest airport for Amarkantak. It is located 254 km away from Amarkantak town. There are regular flights to Jabalpur from Delhi and Mumbai. And from Jabalpur, you can take a direct taxi or cab from the airport to reach Amarkantak.

By Rail:

Pendra road is the nearest rail station to Amarkantak from other parts of the country. It is 17 km from this town and be reached via taxis or buses.

By Road:

you can take State buses to Amarkantak from Pendra Road, shahdol, and Bilaspur. It is also connected to Jabalpur and Rewa by bus.

1. Narmada Kund & Temples

Narmada Kund is a very remarkable attraction place for the devotees. amarkantak is famous for mata Narmada rivers Udgam.

Narmada Kund complex is situated in Narmada rivers Udgam center. It is the origin place of the Narmada River. Narmada Udgam Kund was built by Rewa Nayak.

The complex consists of 16 temples including Lord Shiva Temple, Narmada Temple, Annapurna Mata Temple, Shri Ram Janki Temple and Shri Radha Krishna Temple, Guru Gorakhnath Temple. This complex is spread over 6 acres of land. And incorporate 23 statues of various idols.

A separate pond has been built for taking a dip in the holy waters. It was the place of meditation for great saints like Vyas, Maikaal, and the sages like Brighu, etc. It is located in the heart of the ancient town so reaching there is not an issue.

2. Ancient Temples of Kalachuri Period

These temples are constructed by Kalachuri Maharaja Karnadeva. These are from the ancient period 1042 – 1072 AD.

There are various temples in the complex like the Johila Temple, Vishnu Temple and Shiva Temple, Pancha Math Temple. but in this, the Pataleshwar Mahadev Temple and the Machhendranath Temple are the most famous and tourist attractions.

It is said that Adi Shankaracharya, in 788 AD, has been devoted to the banks of the Narmada River in Amarkantak. He is known as the maker of the Pataleshwar Mahadev Temple in Amarkantak, which is currently called Surajkund.

These temples are currently under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Ancient Temples of the Kalachuri Period are located just behind the Narmada temple.

3. Shri Yantra Mandir

It is said that it is the most ancient temple in India.

This temple is also known as ‘Karna Mandir’ because King Karnadeb Mahachandra built it. It is situated in the Maikal Hills of Amarkantak.

It was constructed under the Kalchuris period by the Kalchuri craftsmen. Temple may look like as it is a 3D projection of the Sri Yantra / Sri Chakra. which makes the core of the divine power of the Goddess Tripura Sundari or the Empress beauty of the Three World.

At the entrance of his temple, a huge sculpture with 4 heads is present. The heads on the temple represent the faces of Goddess Laxmi, Kali, Saraswati, & Bhuvaneshwari. Below that 64 yoginis, the sculpture is carved 16 on each side. Lord Ganesha & Kartik sculpture is also present there.

The temple is constructed on a 90,000 sq. ft. area and 52 feet height.

The construction of the main temple is completed. but work is still in progress for several smaller shrines of this architectural wonder.

4. Shri Sarvodaya Digamber Jain Temple

This temple is located at the origin point of the Narmada River. it is spread over 4 acres of area.

It is not a very old temple like others, construction of this temple started in 2006 under the guidance of Acharya Vidyasagar. construction is still going on it requires a cost of over 20 Crore. construction of the temple is going on using lime and preserved stones pink sand is also used, cement and iron are not used in it.

More than three hundred artists were involved in designing and giving new shapes to temple for nearly 2 yrs. This temple consists of one of the world’s biggest ashtadhatu idols of Bhagawan Adinatha, who was one of the Jain Tirthankaras.

The idol is about ten feet high and weighs approximately 24 tons. After the structure gets complete, it would be around 114 feet high. The Statue were established by Acharya Vidyasagarji Mahamuniraj and Sanghang

The architecture here is similar to the Akshardham temple in Gujarat

5. Dudh Dhara falls

This is the second waterfall from the origin of River Narmada. The Dugdh Dhara falls height is 10 feet. It is 1 km away from Kapil Dhara Falls. The stream of water is milky in color so the fall gains its name as dudh dhara fall as dudh represents a white color.

This waterfall is surrounded by thick woods and dense forests so have to be very careful while trekking there. one can also explore the small caves around the falls where many sages meditate.

As per the Puranas stories it is said that Maharishi Durvasa meditated here. previously this place was called Durvasa dhara but over a period of time the name got changed to Dudh Dhara

It is best to visit this fall in the monsoon season as the water level is higher during those months.

The preferred time to visit this fall is 10:00 am – 05:00 pm.

6. Kapil Dhara Fall

It is the first waterfalls of the Narmada River but Kapila and Erandi rivers also join the Narmada River to form this fall. It is 6 km away from the Narmada Kund Temples. The height of this fall is 100 ft. Mountains and dense forest downhills are surrounded by this fall.

It is said that sage Kapil Muni meditated at this place so the waterfall is named after him. According to mythology Kapil muni had tried to stop the reverse flow of the Narmada River from this point. He also wrote ‘Sankhya philosophy’ in this place.

At the top of the waterfall, there is Kapil Muni Ashram to worship kapileshwar muni and Lord Shiva. As it at very height it gives a very great view at the fall.

Though the falls can be visited throughout the year, the best time to visit is the post-monsoon period i.e., September to January

7. Bhrigu Kamandal

In the dense forest of Dhuni Pani, there is a place called Bhrigu Kamandal. for reaching this place, we need to trek a little bit. because this place is 2 km away from Narmada temple. one cannot take bike or car there we need to walk thought the road now. but one has to be very careful while trekking.

there is a cave where it is saying that rishi bhrigu used to do their sadhana due to which river emerged from his kamandal. He stays

there during monsoon days. he needs water for their pooja so by his prayer Mother Narmada appeared in his kamandal

There is a rock called Kamandal of Rishi Bhrigu. There is a hole in the rock, by putting your hand in it you can draw water. This water is used to worship Shivling which is at a nearby place.

You must visit this unique place if you want to get richer spiritually.

8. Sonemuda

Sonemuda is the origin point of the Sone River. It is 2 km far from Narmadakund and temples.

The Sone River falls down hundreds of feet from the Maikal mountain. This place Sonemuda gives a magnificent and beautiful view as it arrives in the form of a waterfall.

It is said that the river Sone gets its name from gold as gold dust is found in the water of Sone many Megasthanes and other Aryan writers have their opinion on that. for getting out of our busy lives to relax our self sonemuda trip is a must.

9. Kabir Chabutara

This place is situated nearly 5 km from Amarkantak on the way to Bilaspur.

It is the meeting place of three districts two of which are Madhya Pradesh’s Anuppur and Dindori & Chattisgarh Bilaspur.

It is said that Sant Kabir had meditated at this place and achieved deliverance here. He also wrote his famous Dohas at this place. The place holds special importance for the Kabir panthi people and others also.

There is also Kabir Kuti where it is said that he resides in that place. now it is converted into a temple near the chabutra. Saint Kabir’s paduka (footwear) is also kept inside a small temple.

Kabir Vatvriksha is present near chabutara where there was a discussion on spirituality between Sant Kabir Das and Guru Nanak Dev Maharaj.

There is also a pool called Kabir kunda. The specialty of this Kabir Kund is that its water turns milky in the morning for a particular time i.e. 8.45 am to 9.45 am. Fine streams of milky water come out in the pool, Due to which the entire water of the Kund turns milky there is an old saying for that river Narmada washes the feet of Saint Kabir every day with this milk.

There is also the waterfall called Kabir Waterfalls which is a tourist attraction. It is a must-visit place and also a good picnic spot. It is a good trekking spot also for youngsters. because it is surrounded by forest areas.

10. Mai ki Bagiya

It is a natural small garden of trees. which is dedicated to the Goddess Narmada, and is situated around 5 km from Narmadakund and covers the surrounding forests.

Mai ki Bagiya is also called Mother’s Garden. There are small temples of gods and goddesses here. and is also a pond, which is known as Charanodak Kund.

There is an old saying that Narmada Mata used to play at this place with her friend at her tender age, a beautiful girl named Gulbakavali, a small 12-year girl. childhood idol of Mother Narmada is present here. this garden is full of natural beauty.

another saying for this place is Mother Narmada used to choose flowers from this place for worship.

In this garden, there are mango trees, banana trees, roses, fruit trees along Gulbakavli, and other flowering plants. Medicinal plants are especially in the Mai ki Bagiya. gulbakavali is most important in that which is helpful in making eye medicine, gulbakavali plant known to release a lingering sweet smell.

visitors who are doing Narmada Parikrama take a rest here and are allowed to stay at night. Food shelter is free here for parikrama visitors.
