Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh is a unique town known for its history, landscape and arts. The town is situated at a distance of 37 KM from Latipur and 55 KM from Ashoknagar District. It is surrounded by lakes and mountains and is home for major Jain culture, elegant chanderi sarees and Jama masjid. As the city is rich in cultural and architectural aspects, there are a few must visit places.
Talking about the history, the town was once said to be ruled by Shishupal, acording to the Mahabharata. Most people have heard of the word Chanderi famous for its handloom silk weaving, but the word Chanderi comes from the town itself. At that time, the town was a major route for trading. It is because of it’s access to old ports to the Deccan part and Central India.

CHANDERI FORT
The first must visit place in Chanderi of Madhya Pradesh is Chanderi fort. It’s history dates back to the 11th century. Chanderi fort has three gates. The popular gate is known as ‘Khooni Darwaza’ which means ‘gate soaked in blood’. Interesting places in the fort are Johar Smarak located right outside the fort. Other is Khilji Masjid at the entrance of the fort that is believed to be built in the 14th century. Hawa Paur is a balcony which gives a beautiful view of the town. One can take public transport services to reach Chanderi fort. It is open for all days from sunrise to sunset with free of cost entry.
BADAL MAHAL GATE
Still standing proud till the day, Badal Mahal Darwaza is a single structure gate located in the compound. With the height of 100 ft, the structure has a beautiful natural surrounding. In the 15th century, Sultan Mehmood Shah Khilji constructed this gate as a mark of victory. The historic gate is famous for its Mughal architectural style with elegant carvings, motifs and intricate jali work. The gate was used as a reception area for royal guests. When the excavations are unveiled, underground chambers are found which could be the remains of the palace. It is open from 9 AM to 7 PM. The entry fee is 25 per head for Indians, 300 for foreign citizens and free for children below 15. The management charges extra for photography and videography equipment.
CHANDERI MUSEUM
Museums are where history comes to life. Chanderi museum showcases history and heritage things of Neolithic period, and dynasties ranging from Guptas, to Prathiharas and Mayuras. There are many amazing artifacts, exquisite sculptures, carvings, inscriptions and many more of various religions and faiths. The exhibits divides into 5 galleries- 1. History of Chanderi gallery, 2. Vaishanava gallery, 3. Shaiva and Shaktha gallery, 4. Jaina gallery and 5. Anandam gallery. One of the famous and amazing sights is the Jaina Pillar. The museum is open all days except Friday. The timing is 9 AM to 5 PM and entry ticket cost is INR 5.
JAMA MASJID
One can witness amazing architecture techniques that dates back to the 15th century. Jama Masjid remains the only mosque that comes from the medieval period. Ghiyas-ud-Balban constructed it as a victory symbol over Chanderi. He also made sure the structure of the mosque has both Mughal and Chanderi heritage influences. The mosque is mono-colour, open arches and three marble domes are the sight to see. It can holds upto 2000 people at once. The mosque is open daily for visitors.
JAUHAR KUND
The Jauhar Kund is located just outside the fort in Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh. In the 16th century, Mughal army of Babur invaded Rajput King Medini Rai. Jauhar Kund is a place where Rajput women along with their children committed self-immolation to save their dignity and honor. Women and children wore saffron coloured dresses during the self-sacrifice. So, this place is a symbol for love and sacrifice of the women.
KOSHAK MAHAL
The square structure of Koshak Mahal was a symbol of victory over Sultan Mehmood Sharki in the battle of Kalpi. Initially the monument was to be a seven structure building. But only three floors completed and the fourth floor which gives an amazing view of surrounding places is still incomplete. The Mahal is located 4 KM away from Chanderi town and dates back to the year 1455 . The unique architecture lies in the ceiling designs and window carvings and built by white local sandstone.
SHEHZADI KA RAUZA
As we know Chanderi in Madhya Praesh is the place famous for its history and heritage center, it is yet another structure that is a resemblance of love. The structure is the resting place of Mehrunisa, daughter of Governor and her beloved Army chief. The Governor planned to kill the Army chief as he did not approve their relation. He sent the chief to a War and commanded the soldiers to kill him. Mehrunisa couldn’t survive due to grief and ended her life on the spot. Governor was overwhelmed by his daughter’s love and built the structure and buried them at the place. This structure is 12 feet high and looks like a 2 storey building, but from inside it is a single storey square hall.
The town has many interesting spots and has some value. Exploring the town without any planning is the best way to know more about the heritage values of famous places. Talking to the localite to get to know more about the local culture is good way to explore. Food is another aspect that Chanderi is famous for, travellers have to try the local street food. Best time to visit Chanderi is in winters. The climate in November to February is pleasantly cool and temperature ranges between 5°C to 20°C.
