Also known as the land of high passes is the largest province of Jammu and Kashmir. The magnificent place that’s so high up it feels like it's touching heaven. It doesn’t seem that way only because of its altitude but also its unreal beauty.

Its sharp-edged mountains and barren cliffs stand tall and majestic while the picturesque Gompas (Tibetan Buddhist monasteries), meditational Mani walls, pearl white stupas, and multi-colored prayer flags make this high-altitude desert one of the most beautiful places.

The best time to visit Ladakh

The best time to visit Ladakh is definitely from the end of March to mid-august, during winter. April brings Ladakh back to life as the winter ends and the ice begins to thaw. the temperature during April tends to stay around 16 degrees celsius to -1 degrees celsius. These comparatively warm temperatures melt the frozen Pangong and morir lakes and make the plants look healthier and lusher than ever.

The temperature rises further from May to mid-June to around 5 degrees celsius. Around this time the Rohtang pass opens, giving tourists who visit then an opportunity to add some adventure to their Ladakh tour package by taking a bike trip from Manali to Leh.

July to September are the hottest months that Leh experiences with temperatures ranging from the mid-twenties to five degrees Celcius. This time is the best time to visit not only because of the perfect weather but also because if one visits during this time they can witness the Hemis Festival which celebrates the birth of Padmasambhava ( the founder of Tantric Tibetan Buddhism). The festival is beautiful, fun, and filled with zest and enthusiasm making it one you shouldn’t miss.

Though summer is the best time to visit Ladakh, if you want to undertake the Chadar trek and wish to see Ladhak covered in snow making it look like a winter of a pretty musical then winter is the time to visit for you.

How to reach Ladakh:

Ladakh can be reached by air and by road.

By Air:

Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport located in Leh is well connected to almost every major city and India. It has flights flying internationally and from Delhi's IGI airport flying in frequently. This is a military airport and therefore has a very high level of security, making it necessary for all tourists to carry hard copies of all their travel documents ready with them.

By Road:

There are multiple private and government buses traveling from Srinagar and Manali to Ladakh and Leh. The drive is one filled with thrill as its route is through valleys and narrow mountain passes. You can either choose Srinagar as your starting point for the bus ride. This will take you to Ladakh through Zoji La Pass. Alternatively, you can choose Manali as your starting point which will take you to Ladakh through the Rohtang pass.

Though these passes are open from June to October, sometimes heavy snowfall causes delays of a few hours or even a few days; therefore the trip should be planned to keep that in mind.

If you wish to travel by road but do not want to take the bus and instead want to experience something more adventurous you can bike to Ladakh. Having three of the highest motorable mountain passes Ladakh is a great place to bike to. Biking there one can enjoy the unforgettable view and stop occasionally for a steaming cup of butter tea or chai.

Food to try in Ladakh:

Ladakh has rich and nutritious food made with a few ingredients found in the arid and cold land. The food is filling and nourishing so it caters to the need of consuming more calories because of the cold weather and high altitude. Some of the dishes you shouldn’t miss out on when in Ladakh are:

Chutagi: this is a delicious soup full of vegetables and bow-tie-shaped dumplings. The soup is served very hot and is sure to keep you warm and full during your trip.

Skew/ Sku: this is another soup and is a lot like Chutagi, save for the fact that it has meat like yak or mutton and its dumblings are shaped differently. It can be found in multiple restaurants in Ladakh. You should enjoy this soup and its disc-shaped dumplings.

Paba: This is a mountain bread made with barley flour which is kneaded with sugar and oil. This is a staple of the ladakhi cuisine and is usually enjoyed with buttermilk and vegetables.

Butter Tea/ tsaza:

This is a salty/sweet version of the normal Indian chai. Made with tea leaves, milk, and yak butter this is a very refreshing drink that is available all around Ladakh.

Momos:

One of the most famous dishes of Ladakh, momos can be enjoyed in the cold weather when they are fresh out of the steamer. Served with hot chilly chutney, this is a dish you will undoubtedly enjoy the most and shouldn't miss out on.

Thukpa:

Another soup, but this time filled with not just vegetables and sometimes meat but also delicious noodles. This is one of the most commonly eaten foods of Ladakh and can be found at numerous stalls in Ladakh.

Things to do in Ladakh:

Eat Maggie and drink tea close to the clouds: Maggie feels like a whole new dish when eaten at Khardung La pass which is the highest motorable road. Enjoying Maggie and a cup of hot chai while seeing the manifest view that the Himalayas have to offer; is sure to be a highlight of your Ladakh trip.

Visit the Hemis Festival: this festival is held from the 30th of June to the 1st of July and is full of excitement and fun. The best part of this festival is the Chham performance of the lamas, which is a ritualistic dance performed for the gods. The performance is beautifully performed by lamas wearing lion masks and colorful costumes.

Go roading in Nubra valley:

This one is for all the adventurous spirits. At Nubra Valley, they can ride an ATV or go dune bashing in SUVs. The silver dunes that make for a great view and the thrill of a ride are sure to make going to Nubra valley a highlight of your trip.

Ride a camel through Hunder Dunes: these dunes located near the clear and beautiful Shyok and Nubra rivers are home to double-humped Bactrian camels. Take a ride on these camels while exploring the pretty dunes, on your Ladakh trip.

Spot a snow Leopard: The Hemis sanctuary is home to about 200 snow leopards and is a place often visited by tourists to see these majestic snow leopards. The best time to visit is the summer since there is no snow for the leopards to camouflage their snow-white fur in.

Places to visit in Ladakh:

The land of mesmerizing monasteries, beautiful white-washed stupas that is home to red-clothed monks, and natural beauty that can only be compared to heaven has multiple places that are must-visit spots on everyone’s Ladakh trip. Here is a list of these places:

Shanti Stupa:

Shanti stupa is a beautiful white-domed monastery. Located at the top of hill Chanspa, this monastery with its Ladakh architecture that reflects the true culture of Tibetan Buddhism is a place everyone visiting Ladakh must visit. Built by the Japanese in 1991 this monastery is now home to some of buddhas relics. The place is thus a major attraction for its religious significance; however the serene view it sports is another thing that makes it a tourist attraction.

The Hall of Fame:

This museum dedicated to the brave war heroes of the Kargil war puts on a display their stories of courage as they made the biggest sacrifice for their country. The museum’s highlight is the Op Vijay Gallery. The Gallery has the munitions that were used in the war along with the arms caches captured by the Indian Army.

Magnetic hill:

The place that has confused numerous scientists and led to multiple conspiracy theories is this hill where objects seem to roll uphill on their own. This place though, actually, has such a topography that it creates an optical illusion of a hill. This is why it looks like objects are defying gravity and rolling uphill when they are rolling downhill. This is an interesting place to visit and should be on your itinerary.

Tsemo Fort:

This tiny fort covered in prayer flags is famous for being visible from any part of Leh. It has served as a vantage point for years. Underneath this fort is the tsemo monastery and tsemo gompa which has 2 temple buildings that were built in the 15th century. Inside is an eight-meter tall old-faced statue of the Maitreya Buddha.

Spituk monastery:

Also known as the Pituk Gompa is another beautiful monastery of Leh. This was founded in the 14th century and is an important Buddhist pilgrimage center thus attracting many spiritual tourists. Inside the gompa are statues of buddha and Tsongkhapa; while on top is a three-tiered shrine.

Hemis monastery:

This is home to the famous festival of Hemis, which celebrates the birth of Padmasambhava who was the founder of tantric Tibetan Buddhism. The festival showcases many Buddhist traditions and one should not miss this festival when in Leh.

Phyang Monastery:

This monastery is one of the most famous monasteries of Leh, especially popular for its retrospective thangkas, wall paintings, and murals of the Mahakala. There is also a museum situated inside the Phyang monastery. Being almost 900 years old and containing a huge collection of antiques, scriptures, and idols this monastery attracts numerous religious and spiritual tourists from across the world.

Thiskey Monastery: Also known as the Thiksey Gompa this monastery is one of the most religious centers of Leh. It is embellished in such a way that it resembles the Palace of Potala which is located in Tibet. 12 stories high and very beautiful this monastery is home to essential artifacts of buddha like statues, swords, and tapestries; and thus a spot that one must visit on their Ladakh trip
